Two water softener vessels at the north Monmouth Water Treatment plant are in need of repair, which Public Works Director Andy Jackson informs funds have been budgeted to complete the project in the upcoming year:
“We did two last year. We had another vessel lose all the media in it and the way those vessels were designed; there is a steel plate towards the bottom of the vessel where the regeneration of your softener takes place, backwashing, and all that. That plate has rotted away and basically fallen in and then you lose all your media. So a whole has to be cut in the vessel, go in and take all that out, and replace it all. Very expensive to do, but those softeners are twenty, twenty-one years old on those vessels. Obviously, with water production going up, we get a lot of regenerations out there.”
Total cost to repair the two water softener vessels is $420,000.
