The Monmouth College men’s lacrosse team lost the longest game in school history with a six-overtime 7-6 loss on Saturday to Beloit College. The Buccaneers scored the game-winning goal with 2:04 to play in the 6th OT for the sudden-death win.

With snow falling and the temperatures in the low 20s, neither team scored for the first six minutes of action. Beloit took the lead with 8:27 to play in the opening quarter and doubled their lead three minutes later. The Bucs made it 3-0 before the first quarter ended.

Monmouth got on the board just 44 seconds into the second quarter as Ben LaFrenere (Schaumburg, Illinois) scored an unassisted goal. After Beloit scored, LaFrenere notched his second goal in a row to cut the Beloit lead to 4-2. Michael Casey (Chicago, Illinois) got the Scots within a goal as he scored on an assist from LaFrenere. With 4:26 to play in the half, Dominic Knazur (Sugar Grove, Illinois) scored an unassisted goal to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half before Beloit took a 5-4 lead with 4:31 to play in the quarter. Neither team scored the rest of the quarter and the Bucs took one-goal lead into the fourth.

With 6:35 to play in the game, Casey scored his second goal of the game to tie the score. Beloit answered quickly as they regained the lead just 32 seconds later. Casey picked up a hat trick as he scored a minute later on an assist by Carlos Hernandez III (Billings, Montana).

The first five overtimes of 4:00 each were scoreless before Beloit won the game with 2:04 to play in the sixth overtime.

The last time the Scots played an overtime game was March 3, 2020 at Dubuque. The last overtime game at home was also against Dubuque, a 4-OT loss on March 26, 2019. That 4-OT game was the longest in school history before Saturday.

The Scots travel to Dubuque, Iowa to face Clarke University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The next home game is Saturday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m. against Dubuque University.
