It’s tick season. Dressing for success can go a long way and Insect expert Kait Chapman with the University of Nebraska Extension office says ticks do seem to be expanding their territory which could include new threats of Lyme disease.
“If it is bearable on a hot day, wear the long clothing. If you are going into a place where you know has a lot of ticks, even tucking your pants into your socks can help and wearing white socks so you can see them easier can help. We are seeing different changes in weather patterns, things get warmer, things get drier, ticks spread by other hosts of wildlife. A lot of ticks are not successful at transmitting disease if they have been feeding for 24 hours or less. The sooner you can get the ticks off of you, the better.”
Chapman recommends undressing quickly and putting your clothing in the wash as soon as possible after being outdoors in areas where you suspect ticks may be living. Then check your body for any pesky tag-alongs.
