An effort to stop book bans from taking place in Illinois was signed into law by the Governor on Monday.
Under the law, public and school libraries will have to follow the American Library Association Bill of Rights that says books should not be removed from libraries for partisan or personal disapproval. If a library bans a book for one of those reasons, it will no longer be eligible for state grants.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias proposed the law and says it will provide access to books that librarians take care in selecting.
The state says there were 67 attempts to ban books last year.
