Walter V. “Sonny” Lundberg, 90, of Peoria, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Graham Hospital, Canton.

Sonny was born at home on October 24, 1932 in Orange Township. He was the son of Walter V. and Genevieve (Brockelhurst) Lundberg. Surviving Sonny are his sisters, LaWanda Ruff of Avon and Helen Ehrenhart of Cambridge, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, two nephews and a great-niece.

Sonny was a 1950 graduate of Knoxville High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He attended Western Illinois University and later transferred to the University of Illinois Engineering College, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering. Sonny retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation in 1989. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, the American Society of Engineers, the Institute of Traffic Engineers and the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185 since 1958. Sonny enjoyed gardening and was very well known for his strawberry patch and tomatoes. He also loved sharing his harvest with his neighbors, friends and family. Most of all, Sonny loved spending time with his family. He took his mom to dinner every Sunday and hosted an annual birthday celebration for her. For ten years he enjoyed taking an annual cruise with his sisters and brother-in-law, and he loved spending holidays with his extended family. Sonny was a great son, brother and uncle who loved and took care of his family.
