Bernice Wehering, age 86, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed from this life at 7:35 AM on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at the Monmouth Nursing Home. Bernice was diagnosed in August with an aggressive cancer, and was placed into hospice care soon after. She was born October 27, 1937 in Keithsburg, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas and Lucille (Gray) Green Gray. Bernice was raised in the Gladstone area and attended and graduated from G&O High School. On February 11, 1956, she married Glenn Richard Wehering and he is surviving.
Bernice worked at General Telephone (GTE) during the days when every call was connected by the phone operators. She also worked at Brown Lynch Scott in Monmouth as a merchandise buyer. Later, Bernice worked at Hines and McClintock in Monmouth until its closing and then worked at Gem Electronics as their bookkeeper until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, street rods, and NASCAR. Bernice was an excellent cook and always enjoyed trying new recipes. She was selected as Cook of the Week and featured in the local newspaper with several of her favorite recipes-one being her famous peanut brittle. Bernice and Richard were founders and Charter Members of the Limited Rods of Western Illinois, where Bernice served as the Club Treasurer for several years. Mostly, Bernice loved being with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends.
Surviving Bernice is her husband of 67 years, Richard Wehering of Monmouth, IL, two daughters, Jerri (Dennis) Kottwitz of Clever, MO. and Terri Harris of Galesburg, IL, two grandchildren, Candace (Matt) Talley-Free and Alaina (Michael) Talley-Scott, and four great-grandchildren, Grayson Free, Gavin Free, Addison Free, and Colson Scott. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister Allene Hall, one brother, Charlie Gray, and one son-in-law, Kenneth Harris.
