It is Children’s Dental Health month during February, creating a time to bring awareness to the importance of oral health among children and developing good dental habits, explains Registered Dental Hygienist with Eagle View Community Health System Shannon Miller:

“Basically, Children’s Dental Health month is to bring awareness of the importance of oral health among kids, developing good habits at a young age, and going to regular dental visits to get a good start on the lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Tooth decay is one of the number one chronic infections diseases among children and is largely preventable by going to your regular visits and brushing and flossing every day. By age five, 60 percent of all kids have been affected by tooth decay, which is a huge number. Children with oral health problems are three times more likely to miss school due to dental pain. By doing prevention you are cutting down on missed school and things like that.”

Miller also shares the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends taking a child to their first dental visit by the age of one.
