Stay Safe and Cool as Temperatures Rise

With near triple-digit temperatures in the forecast, Ameren is providing some suggestions to help customers stay safe and cool while keeping energy costs low.

“Extreme heat comes with health and safety concerns, and that’s why we want our customers to be aware and take action to protect themselves,” said Tony Lozano, director of energy efficiency and demand response at Ameren. “Staying hydrated, taking breaks and running the AC are important steps to take during this stretch of high temperatures.”

Customers can ensure their homes stay comfortable while increasing energy efficiency by following these simple tips:

  • Adjust your thermostat – Save up to 12% on your cooling costs by programming a smart thermostat. In the summer months, raising your thermostat to the recommended temperature of 78 degrees will use less energy.
  • Replace your HVAC filter – Replacing your furnace filter every three months can save you up to 15% and will help your furnace run efficiently. A dirty filter also allows dander, mold and dust to circulate throughout your home.
  • Seal your home – Keep the air conditioning indoors by caulking and weatherstripping your doors, windows, along molding and around electrical sockets and switches. Caulk, weatherstripping and window film kits are easy and inexpensive DIY options that can save you up to 30%.
  • Set your ceiling fan –Set your ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise in the summer so you feel cooler. This simple change can help you save up to 15% on your energy costs.
  • Use your grill – Grilling outside instead of using your stove not only helps you use less energy but also keeps your home cooler. You can also save by using a small appliance, such as an air fryer.

If customers do not have an air-conditioned place to stay, visit a cooling center in Missouri or Illinois to take a break from the heat.

Extreme summer heat also poses safety concerns when spending time outside. To avoid overheating, keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Stay hydrated – Drink 8 ounces of water every 15-20 minutes when spending time outdoors.
  • Take breaks –If you must be outside for extended periods, take breaks in the shade or indoors to avoid overexertion and overheating.
  • Dress for the heat –Wear light, loose clothing and consider UPF clothes for added UV protection while outside.
