Mrs. Alberta Gibson, 81, of Galesburg, Illinois died 6:20 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Allure of Lake Storey in Galesburg.
She was born July 1, 1943, in Moline, Illinois to Roosevelt and Thelma (Matheny) Cleavinger. She married James C. Gibson on January 20, 1986, in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on August 18, 2023.
She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jan (and Joyce) Gibson of Calhoun, Georgia, Jerry (and Deb) Gibson of Dahinda, Illinois, and Jay (and Janelle) Gibson of Orion, Illinois; her “adopted” family, Becky Fowler and James Fowler and several cousins, nieces, and nephews including Kristian Cleavinger, Judy Ann Cleavinger, and Cathy Jo Cleavinger. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Cleavinger.
Alberta attended school in Bushnell, Illinois. She was a certified janitor and worked in housekeeping at Western Illinois University for 15 years. She retired in 1985. After moving from Macomb, Illinois she moved to Galesburg and worked in housekeeping for Galesburg Cottage Hospital for four years and then she worked in the kitchen at Galesburg High School for two years. She then worked for the Pioneer Seed Company in Woodhull, Illinois for six years, sorting corn. Alberta was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she was very active with her church family.
The visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2024, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. The funeral will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel with Bishop Sam Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the family.
