It is scholarship season at the Mellinger Educational Foundation in Monmouth. Applicants must live in McDonough, Fulton, Mercer, Knox, Henderson, or Warren Counties and must be either a high school senior, undergraduate student, or non-traditional student going to college. Secretary and Data Administrator Jackie Watson shares the story of how the awarded Mellinger scholarships came to be:

“The foundation was founded back in 1959, mainly by a lady by the name of Inez Hensleigh, she was a sister to Edward Arthur. Edward Arthur Mellinger always wanted to create a foundation to provide scholarships for students; however, before he died the stock market crash happened and he was unable to do so. He had two sisters and after one sister passed, by the name of Maude Mehaffey, Inez Hensleigh was the remaining sister and she happened to live in Monmouth, so she contacted an accountant and lawyer and that was the birth of the foundation.”

If you currently receive a Mellinger Scholarship, you do not have to reapply, a renewal form will automatically be sent on your present scholarship in mid-May. For more information and the scholarship application, visit mellinger.org.
