After a successful year of competitions, the Abingdon-Avon FFA Conduct of Chapter Meetings team is advancing to the Nationals after taking home the state title. Team member Jose Featherlin shares that the team’s success began at the district contest.

“We won our first competition at Districts. Our second competition was Section, and we weren’t really happy with how we did in that meeting, because we didn’t think it was our best meeting. We ended up pulling through with second place,” shares Featherlin. “So we were able to move on to the State competition, and we all went in pretty confident, and we all thought that was one of our best meetings.”

The FFA Conduct of Chapter Meetings competition is for FFA members in grades 7,8, and 9 to help introduce members to parliamentary procedure and efficient meeting practices as they debate the presented topic. James Shuey says that they have held many early morning meetings to help prepare for the contest.

“We’ve been working so hard, waking up at 7:30 am, coming to practice, practicing during school, and then practicing after school as well,” says Shuey.

He adds that the team will take a little break before starting back up over the summer.

“We’re just going to take the time to the end of the year just to relax and recuperate from this well-deserved win. And after that, we’re probably going to start working hard during the summer and then get ready for that national championship,” says Shuey.
