The United Red Storm football team opened their 2025 season last week with a matchup against the ROWVA/Williamsfield Cougars. Both defenses set the tone early, trading stops before the Cougars finally broke through for a 6-0 lead. United responded with a touchdown of their own to tie the game at 6-6, but ROWVA/Williamsfield immediately answered with an 84-yard kickoff return to go back in front 12-6, a lead they carried into halftime. The second half mirrored the first, with points hard to come by. The Cougars struck first after the break and added a two-point conversion to push the lead to 20-6. United battled back late, driving all the way to the 2-yard line before being turned away. Moments later, the Red Storm capitalized on a fumble in Cougar territory, punching it in to close the gap to 20-12. That is as close as they would get, as ROWVA/Williamsfield bled the clock out to seal the victory. Head Coach Andrew Goodwin said that despite the loss, his staff saw plenty of positives to build on in the early going.
United will look to bounce back in Week 2 with a road trip to Havana. The Ducks are also searching for their first win after falling 54-7 to Princeville in their opener. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. as the Red Storm aim to notch their first victory under Coach Goodwin.
Monmouth-Roseville is coming off an opening week TRAC cross-division win on the road against Mercer County. The Titans methodically ground their way to a 35-14 win over the Golden Eagles. Offensively, Monmouth-Roseville rushed for 340 yards in the game as a team, led by Nick Huston’s 213 yards on just 15 carries. Defensively, the Titan picked off all four passes that Mercer County attempted and also recovered a fumble, as well. There were many positives that head coach Jeremy Adolphson could take away from the game but, like he knows that if the Titans want to make some noise this year, there are also things to clean up.
Monmouth-Roseville will host their old rivals, the Orion Chargers, at Coach Dobry Field in Monmouth for their home opener tonight at 7:00. The Chargers are coming off a 40-21 week one win over at home over the Spring Valley Hall/Putnam County co-op.
