The City of Galesburg is thrilled to announce a major expansion of the Lake Storey walking path during the upcoming year, with the full loop around the lake completed in 2027. This highly anticipated project will expand the popular multi-use path, currently running along the north and west sides of the lake, around the full circumference of the lake, providing a seamless, fully paved loop for outdoor recreation, such as hiking, walking pets, running, and biking. This significant undertaking is made possible through two Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

“Walking paths improve the quality of life for our citizens and offer wonderful outdoor recreation, health, and wellness benefits,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works. “We are extremely grateful for the ITEP grants from IDOT, which have allowed us to move forward with this opportunity for our community.”

The project is split into two phases: a 2021 ITEP Grant of $2 million provides funding for Phase I, which includes the extension of the 10-foot-wide multi-use path along S. Lake Storey Road. A subsequent 2023 ITEP Grant of $655,560 provides the necessary funding for Phase II, which is the path extension to the north that will complete the full loop around Lake Storey.

Plans for Phase I are complete and scheduled for a January IDOT letting, which puts Phase I on track to begin and complete construction during 2026. Phase II plans are currently under review by IDOT, and it is anticipated that work will be bid out and completed in 2027.

The new, continuous path will be a unifying recreational artery, seamlessly linking the amenities on the north side—including soccer and softball fields, beach access, kayak and boat launches, a playground, and hiking trails—with the facilities on the south side of the lake, such as Allison Campground and the Lakeside Water Park and Recreational Facility.

Furthermore, the completed loop will enhance the connection with Carl Sandburg College, located just across the road on the south side of the lake. This improved access will provide more accessible walking and biking routes between the campus, nearby housing, and the Lake Storey recreational amenities.

“We are excited to see this work take place to expand opportunities for citizens to enjoy the beautiful lake and quality of life in our community,” said City Manager Eric Hanson. “Having the full loop, with city recreational amenities on both sides and close proximity to the Carl Sandburg College campus and housing, offers positive synergy that will benefit the entire community for years to come.”

The attached map illustrates the current path, as well as planned extensions. More information on Lake Storey Park, and other City of Galesburg recreational amenities can be found on the City’s website.
