Monmouth City Council has approved an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to improve Vehicle Detection Systems that control the traffic lights at intersections along Highway 34, explains City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher:
“This will be at 6th Street and 11th Street, intersections with US Highway 67, and also at West Broadway; those four traffic light intersections. The agreement calls for the City to participate in ten percent of the cost only for the 6th Street and the 11th Street intersections because those are under local control. So, the state will be paying 100 percent of the cost for the traffic signalization detection systems for 67 at West Broadway. The total cost of that work is $161,000 and the City’s portion will only be $8,000,” Steinbrecher reports.
“Along with that, there were three other actions taken. There were two ordinances to regulate the encroachment on a public right-of-way, as well as, amending the parking lot to prohibit parking on US 34. These were both actions that the Illinois Department of Transportation had requested the City to enact as part of the signal detection improvements that are to be made. Finally, there was a funding resolution to provide the $8,000 local match to the $161,000 project,” adds Steinbrecher.
The agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the three actions that followed were all approved by the Monmouth City Council.
