Lion’s Little League Baseball at Harmon Park in Monmouth, Illinois, has served generations of young players. Like many organizations, there was a drastic decrease in participation after COVID-19. There was even talk of shuttering the league.
“The league was down to three minor and three major league teams,” said Dan Doyle, president and chair of the Lion’s Little League. “We had major concerns about the future of baseball in Monmouth.”
The League has recently seen a resurgence of interest, growing more than 50% to over 100 players this season. However, this growth highlighted the need for more equipment, additional umpires and a neglected field to be rehabilitated to accommodate the new players and teams.
Recognizing this need, Smithfield Foods stepped up to the plate with a $5,000 contribution, enabling the baseball program to rebuild the pitching mound, replace pitching machines, hire additional umpires and purchase a new PA system.
“Smithfield is always looking for ways to give back to our local community,” said Bruce Rundle, Monmouth facility general manager for Smithfield Foods. “This was a fantastic opportunity to help a program that reaches so many youth in our area. We are proud to invest in the growth and vitality of the places we call home.”
“Without the generosity of Smithfield Foods, none of this would have been possible,” said Doyle. With the assistance of Smithfield and the upgraded facilities, Doyle believes the League will continue to thrive. “We have nine teams total this year and it is our belief that we will have 10 to 12 teams next year.”
