The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 261 Pine St. at 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning.  The response included all three stations and 11 personnel on duty. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the structure was already completely engulfed by fire. Battalion Chief David Farrell immediately requested a call back for extra manpower as per operation guidelines. One occupant did escape and was life flighted from OSF Hospital. There was one confirmed fatality in the fire.

Fires that occur during sub zero temperatures present especially dangerous and challenging problems. Firefighters experience higher levels of fatigue battling the temperatures, freezing water and trying to maneuver in snow and ice. A total of 6 firefighters were called back to help rotate crews on scene and to provide emergency coverage for the city. The Galesburg Street Department was called in for equipment and additional salt on Pine St.

The house had been placarded as unfit for habitation by the City of Galesburg. The fire is currently under investigation by Galesburg Fire Investigators, Galesburg Police Detectives and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
