Mark Mossman, associate provost and associate vice president of undergraduate studies and strategic planning, has been appointed interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective Nov. 1.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to Dr. Mossman for accepting the provost position. As a tenured faculty member, Dr. Mossman has worked in collaboration with faculty and staff to work toward continued improvement of the student learning experience at Western and the senior leadership team and I look forward to working with him,” said WIU President Guiyou Huang.

Mossman came to WIU as an assistant professor of English in 2001, and was promoted to associate professor in 2005, and professor in 2010. Mossman also served as the director of Graduate Studies in English and was named chair of the English and Journalism department in 2010. Mossman has served as co-coordinator of WIU’s Dual Enrollment Program and in 2016 developed a freshman student Living and Learning Community focused on the liberal arts at Western. Mossman joined the Provost’s Office in 2018 as the Associate Provost of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. In Summer of 2023 he was selected for the Becoming a Provost Academy (BAPA), organized by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).

Mossman received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville and his Ph.D. in English from Saint Louis University.

“During this time of transition, WIU’s administration remains committed to our promise to provide quality education guided by professional and diverse faculty and staff,” Huang said.
