In response to the state of Illinois’ decision to suspend the one percent grocery tax, the Monmouth City Council unanimously passed an ordinance restoring the tax to maintain financial stability. Mayor Rod Davies explains this is not a new tax in the City, it will just be a continuation:
“August 5, 2024, Governor Pritzker repealed the one percent statewide grocery tax and that tax will be repealed on December 31st of this year. All of that one percent sales tax on groceries came to the units of local government, all the municipalities around the state, so all of the local municipalities have had to reinstate that one percent sales tax. In our case, we were going to lose over $300,000 a year. We have all reinstated that one percent sales tax. When the old one expires on December 31st, the local municipal one will be in effect on January 1, 2026. This is not a new tax, it is just a continuation of the old tax that was repealed by the governor.”
Additionally, the citizen request option on the City of Monmouth website, known as SeeClickFix, has been very successful as several requests and concerns have been brought to the attention of City workers to address.
