M-R Chorus Looking for 6th Straight State Crown

Monmouth-Roseville High School will host a Solo & Ensemble Sectional this weekend. With five consecutive IHSA Class B vocal state championships under the program’s belt, Choral Director Kevin Ferry is excited and anxious to get to Saturday, but doesn’t want his kids to overthink the competition.

“Like anything else, everybody has to be ready to go. You never know when your event is going to matter towards points for hopefully winning another state championship, so everybody has to be ready,” he said.

The first event of the Sectional will start at 8:30 a.m. with events running until around 3:30 p.m. 17 area schools will congregate at MRHS for nearly 950 different events featuring over 750 competitors. The Monmouth-Roseville Sectional is one of 21 sectionals being held across the state. Scores are compiled at each sectional site with the state champions crowned based upon those scores.

The past two years, Monmouth-Roseville has garnered an absolute perfect score of 252 points in the vocal portion of the competition. Ferry is confident that benchmark can be reached once again.

“There’s going to be a lot of great music going on. And quite honestly, there is going to be some competition. You’re seeing these schools starting to want to do this more and more and more. That’s got me a little nervous, but I think our kids are up for the challenge. I feel very confident in our kids’ abilities,” he said.
