Monmouth faculty recital to celebrate Schumanns’ ‘love story for the ages’ on Oct. 5
A married Monmouth College faculty couple will celebrate “a love story for the ages” when they play the music of Clara and Robert Schumann on Oct. 5.
Pianist Solee Lee-Clark and baritone Thomas Clark will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium. Their special celebration of the life and music of the Schumanns is free and open to the public.
“No other musical couple exemplifies the excitement and drama of the Romantic era like Clara and Robert Schumann,” said Lee-Clark. “No other couple did as much to influence and shape the music of the time.”
The recital’s carefully selected program will showcase some of the Schumanns’ most famous piano works, as well as vocal pieces written by Robert as a wedding gift to Clara. The recital will be weaved together by narrators Sarah and John Henderson as they share excerpts from letters of love written by the couple. Sarah Henderson is director of the College’s Hewes Library.
“The Schumanns’ music speaks to us in a timeless, universal language,” said Lee-Clark. “Their romance is a love story for the ages, while Robert’s ongoing battle with depression, and eventual descent into insanity, makes their noble, life-affirming creations all the more remarkable.”
Monmouth College Chorale’s annual spaghetti dinner is Oct. 5 at Faith United
The Monmouth College Chorale invites the local community to a supper so it can sing in Europe.
The Chorale will host its annual spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Monmouth’s Faith United Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Eighth St.
The dinner will raise funds for the Chorale’s annual spring break trip, which in 2020 will take the ensemble to the European cities of Salzburg, Vienna and Prague.
The cost for the meal is $5, which includes all-you-can-eat spaghetti (including a vegetarian sauce option), salad, garlic bread, dessert and lemonade.
Chorale students are selling tickets in advance, or tickets can be purchased at the door.
Directed by Monmouth music professor Tim Pahel, the Chorale’s membership has grown this year, as only three members graduated in May and 15 new members have been added.
“We were good last year – so we’re adding strength and lots of good freshman leaders,” said Pahel. “We’re excited about all the good things that will be coming from these students.”
The Chorale’s next performance is Oct. 19 as part of Homecoming festivities at the College.
