Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 15, 2020

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team took a bus trip to Peoria last night to take on the Peoria Heights Patriots. After a slow start, the Titans broke open a close game at the halftime break with 41 second half points on their way to a 66-46 victory. Monmouth-Roseville gets back to .500 at (9-9) with the win, while the Patriots fall back to .500 on the season at (8-8). Conner Olson hit four, 3-pointers on his way to a season-high of 19 points for the Titans. Jack Thompson and Rashaun King were also in double figures for Monmouth-Roseville with 11 points apiece.

United beat Galva 71-57 in Lincoln Trail Conference play. Declan Flynn led the (12-5) Red Storm with 21 points. He led four United players in double figures. Evan Wynne and Jacob Dutton had 13 points each and Cormaic Flynn had 12 for the Red Storm as well. United is (2-0) in the LTC.

Also in the Lincoln Trail, West Central took a quality Wethersfield team to overtime before losing 70-66. Landen Beelman led West Central with 19 points, while Jackson Krieger chipped in with 17 and Nate Bigger scored 10 for the Heat. Wethersfield was led by Coltin Quagliano’s 35 points. West Central is (5-12) and the Flying Geese move to (11-5) for the year.

Elsewhere in the LTC, it was Annawan over Ridgewood 79-73 and Stark County defeating Mercer County 72-57.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets continued their nice season with a 55-42 win over the Western Big Six Conference’s Alleman Pioneers. David Hise and Eli Loving led Knoxville with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The Bullets are (15-3).
The Galesburg Silver Streak boys knocked off Morton 51-43 for their 11th straight win. The (16-2) Streaks were led in scoring by Jaylin McCants’ 19 points and eight rebounds. McCants went over the 1,000 career point mark in the 3rd quarter.

The Macomb Bombers boys basketball team gave Geneseo all they could handle but the Maple Leafs made enough plays down the stretch to get a 65-54 win over the Bombers. Macomb is (4-13) and Geneseo is (13-5).

Wrestling

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan wrestling team held their senior night festivities at Monmouth-Roseville High School before their last home meet of the season. The Titans lost to Riverdale 51-18. Monmouth-Roseville got a win via pin by Drayson Griffin. The Titans were defeated by Knoxville 39-37 in a contest that came down to the final match. Trey Anderson recorded a pin for Monmouth-Roseville and Griffin got another victory on the night in a 9-0 decision.

Junior High

In junior high volleyball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans opened their season at United last night. The 7th grade got a 25-15, 25-16 win over the Red Storm. Leading scorers for the Titans were Emily Gunn with 19 service points and 4 assists. Brianna Woodard had 8 service points and 8 kills. The 8th grade Titans won 25-6, 25-15 and were led by Brianna Woodard’s 5 kills. Elise Blaesing handed out 6 assists and Brianna Woodard and Aubrey Kills each served 10 points.
