Thousands were without power after severe thunderstorms ripped through central Iowa Monday. Mid-American Energy is reporting over 100-thousand people were without power around the Des Moines metro after storms reaching winds around 70 to 100 miles-per hour came through. Community members shared photos on social media of downed trees and power poles, damaged homes. buildings and vehicles, and localized flooding on some city streets. Locally, high winds and heavy rain hit the Monmouth area Monday afternoon around 1:45, bringing down tree limbs including covering the roadway on West Broadway and snapping a power pole in town.
Thousands of people in the Quad Cities could spend the day without power. More than 100-thousand people lost power at the worst of yesterday’s storms on both sides of the river. As of midnight, MidAmerican Energy said 111-thousand people were in the dark. There is no word when power will be restored. The National Weather Service says winds of almost 90 miles-per-hour cut across the Quad Cities yesterday afternoon. Those winds snapped trees and pushed down power polls. There are no reports of any serious injuries because of the storm.
