There’s a renewed push for legislation ending a special surcharge on your natural gas bill. Lawmakers approved the surcharge in 2013 to help utilities pay for urgent infrastructure repairs says Representative Joyce Mason of Gurnee.
“Unfortunately, instead of just making the necessary safety repairs, the utilities are now spending money on things like installing new meters and replacing perfectly safe pipes and we are all getting stuck with the bill.”
Mason’s proposal ends the surcharge on people’s gas, Nicor and Ameren Illinois bills. She says families are already struggling to pay home heating costs and don’t need to be saddled with extra fees.
