Monmouth improves to 6-0 in MWC with 56-12 Win

MONMOUTH, ILL. (10/22/2022) The Monmouth College Football team remained undefeated in Midwest Conference play with a 56-12 win at Cornell College on Saturday. The Scots are 6-1 overall, 6-0 in MWC and will travel to face defending champions Lake Forest next weekend.

After forcing a three-and-out on Cornell’s first drive, the Scots took over at their own 35. Carter Boyer (Carthage, Illinois) completed three passes for 18 yards before running for a 37-yard touchdown to give the Scots the lead.

Cornell punted from their own 49 but the Scots turned the ball over as Boyer was intercepted. Cornell returned the pick to the Monmouth 11 but got nothing out of it. Korbyn Personett (Pittsfield, Illinois) recorded a sack before Nick Harris (Winter Haven, Florida) picked off a pass to give Monmouth the ball on their own one.

The Scots punted but then forced a three-and-out. Devin Lawrence (Hawthorne, Florida) ran for 14 yards and then seven on the first two plays as the quarter ended. Boyer hit Nate Thornton (Peoria, Illinois) for 31 yards and then ran for another 23. Lawrence finished off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run and Brendan Bishop (Sherman, Illinois) ran in the two-point conversion after a botched snap.

Another Rams punt gave the Scots the ball on their own one. Boyer went deep tp Thornton for 46 yards on the first play. Two more first downs got the Scots into the red zone and Boyer found Bishop for a 19-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead.

The Scots got the ball back on their own 21 after another Cornell punt. Boyer completed four passes and ran for another first down into Cornell territory. The Scots had a touchdown called back due to a penalty but moved the ball back inside the 10 on a pass to Thornton. After Riley Fetterer (Milan, Illinois) ran the ball down to the one, Lawrence took it in for the touchdown and a 29-0 halftime lead.

Monmouth got the ball to start the second half and Boyer hit Jake Uryasz (Farmington, Illinois) for 37 yards on the first play. Two plays later, Lawrence scored on a 37-yard run for his third touchdown of the game and a 36-0 Monmouth lead.

Cornell got on the board with a touchdown in their first drive of the half, and they missed the extra point. Monmouth had a slow start to the next drive with a holding penalty and a sack but then Boyer hit Thornton for a 77-yard touchdown on 3rd and 17 for a 43-6 Scots lead.

Cornell punted on the first play of the fourth quarter. Marcus Albers (Galesburg, Illinois) ran for four yards and Fetterer completed a pass to Bishop for seven. Two more passes got the Scots inside the 10 and Fetterer’s 7-yard run on 3rd and 5 gave the Scots a 50-6 lead.

Zane Beebe (Davenport, Iowa) got the ball back for Monmouth with an interception on the Cornell 27. Brayden Deem (Andalusia, Illinois) took over at quarterback and ran for 14 yards. Two plays later, the defense held on 3rd and 5 and Szelc missed a 30-yard field goal. The Rams went down the field on six plays and scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass to cut the Monmouth lead to 50-12. The Scots got the final score of the game as freshman Alex Egipciaco (Galesburg, Illinois) scored on a 61-yard touchdown run. The kick was no good to give the Scots a 56-12 lead.

Boyer completed 10-of-25 passes for a career-high 353 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 73 yards and a touchdown. Fetterer was 4-for-5 passing for 43 yards and he ran for 11 yards and a touchdown. Lawrence ran 12 times for 82 yards and three touchdowns while Egipciaco had 62 yards and a score.

Thornton caught six passes for 191 yards and a touchdown. Uryasz had five catches for 85 yards while Nick Obsaint (Naples, Florida) caught seven balls for 58 yards. Bishop had a touchdown catch on four receptions for 49 yards and also ran for a 2-point conversion.

Brant Baltes (Lisbon, Iowa) led the Scots with nine tackles while Nick Serrano (Miami, Florida) had seven. Personett had two sacks and three tackles for loss. Serrano and Sencere Brent (Peoria, Illinois) also had sacks. .

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Boyer has two games with at least 300 passing yards this season. His previous career-high was 309 at Grinnell on Sept. 10. He has at least two touchdown passes in four of the last five games. The Scots are 38-39-1 all-time against Cornell. Monmouth has won eight in a row with at least 27 points scored in those wins and 40 or more scored in six of them. The Scots travel to Lake Forest next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Foresters won in Monmouth last year to win the conference and are 5-1 in MWC action this season.
