Here’s the WMOI/WRAM Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 1, 2023:

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is junior boys basketball player, Darrion Smith. Darrion’s play on both ends of the floor helped the Titans to a (3-1) Consolation Championship finish at the Macomb/Western Holiday Tournament. He averaged 8.5 points and drilled five, 3-pointers. Darrion’s biggest contribution came on the defensive end, as the 8 steals in the four games.

The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is senior boys swimmer, Ethan Elswick. Ethan got off to a great start in 2023 with a pair of top-5 finishes in a 3-team meet against larger schools, Washington and Peoria Notre Dame. He placed 4th in the 100 yard breaststroke and 5th in the 100 yard butterfly. Earlier this season, Ethan placed 1st in the 200 yard IM and 3rd in the 100 yard freestyle in a 3-school meet.

The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is sophomore girls basketball player, Addie Seitz. In the final game before a long Christmas break, Addie had six points in a narrow loss to a solid Macomb squad. She has been the second leading scorer for the Lady Heat this season. Addie leads the team is assists.

The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is sophomore girls wrestler, Eliana Juarez. Eliana was the top placing Silver Streak at the Jacksonville Crimson Holiday Invitational. She placed 4th in the 120 pound class. Eliana went (2-2) for the tournament, with her two wins coming by way of pinfall. Earlier this season, she was 3rd at the Keokuk Iowa JV Invite.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week is junior boys bowler, Braden Hagerty. Braden had a fantastic week on the lanes. His six-game series of 878 placed him 49th overall in the Hononegah Junior Gold Shootout. Better yet, Braden was 13th overall for his single-high game of 210.
