The Western Illinois women’s tennis team opened the season this weekend, splitting a pair of matches in Galesburg.
On Saturday, the Leathernecks fell to Illinois State 6-1, but on Sunday, WIU picked up the first win of the winter, topping IUPUI in tight fashion, winning 4-3.
Against the Jags, the teams of Paige Grice and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Agatha Carbonell and Anna-Evelina Trush picked up victories to get the Leathernecks the doubles point.
Grice and Rossetto Diniz de Souza won 6-4 and Carbonell and Trush scored a 6-4 win.
In singles, the two teams split 3-3, giving WIU the victory.
Grice and Rossetto Diniz de Souza were both victorious again. Grice won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 while Rossetto Diniz de Souza had to go to a tiebreak, but scored the victory, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5).
Trush locked up the victory for the Leathernecks, winning in two sets, 6-3, 7-6.
On Saturday, Trush scored the lone WIU win, winning by default against Illinois State.
Western Illinois now hits the road for a pair of matches, playing at Cincinnati and Bowling Green on Friday and Saturday.
