James R. Briggs, Sr., 83, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 5:08 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2024 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
He was born on May 9, 1941 in Monmouth, IL, the son of Bill, Sr. and Betty (Benson) Briggs. Jim was raised and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1959.
Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years from 1959-1963.
Jim married Sara Jane Hutchins on March 26, 1960 in Palmyra, MO. She preceded in death on June 23, 2020.
Jim first worked as a barber in the Quad Cities for several years. In 1977 he opened his own barber shop in Monmouth and operated that until his retirement in 2003. He was an avid golfer and loved being out on the course as much as he could. Jim was a die-hard Chicago Bears fan. He enjoyed his daily exercise and was an animal lover.
Surviving Jim is his son, Rick Briggs of Monmouth, IL; and two brothers, William (Gwen) Briggs of Monmouth, IL, Mike, Sr. (Susan) Briggs of Monmouth, IL. Also surviving is his cousin, Denny Wadell of Rock Island, IL; two nieces, Tracy (Kevin) Framer of London Mills, IL, Shaila (Robert) Lenz of Little York, IL; two nephews, Mike Briggs, Jr. of Burlington, IA, Randy Briggs of Monmouth, IL; and best friend, Bob Dennison of Monmouth, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife.
Cremation rites have been accorded. No visitation or services are planned. Memorials can be made to University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and can be sent to the funeral home.
