Dorothy L. Wisslead, age 91, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 24, 2025 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst, IL. She was born November 13, 1933 in Rozetta Township, Henderson County, the daughter of Earl and Rose Sly McPeak.  On April 5, 1952, she married J. Dale Wisslead in Blandinsville, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on June 26, 2007.

Dorothy was a devoted farm wife and mother, as well as a loving grandmother. She was known for her boundless energy, sweet spirit, and love of the simple things in life. She brought joy to everyone who knew her with her quick wit, great sense of humor, and warm presence.

Dorothy had a special gift for making every day moments feel magical. Whether it was buggy rides with Dale through the country, a morning spent mushroom hunting, or casting a line while fishing, she found happiness in nature and simple pleasures.

She was a wonderful cook, and an even better baker. She welcomed family and friends around her table, where fried catfish, mac and cheese, and green beans often made an appearance – followed by homemade blackberry cobbler or honey on vanilla ice cream. After sleepovers, you could count on waffles for breakfast, served with love.

Dorothy loved the great outdoors. She took pride in her yard and garden, and enjoyed bonfires, picnics and even yardwork. She especially loved to mow the grass.

Dorothy was a member of the former Sciota Christian Church, and the Sciota Rebekah Lodge # 195 IOOF.

She lived her life with quiet strength and joy, never needing extravagance to be happy. The memories she created will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.

Survivors include three sons: Jim (Pam) Wisslead of Sciota, IL, Gregory Dale (Debora) Wisslead of LaHarpe, IL, Brad Wisslead of Bloomington, IL, one daughter-in-law: Terry Wisslead of East Peoria, IL, nine grandchildren, and twenty one great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one son: John Dean Wisslead, two brothers: James E. McPeak and Kenneth Lloyd McPeak, one sister: Donna Jean Owsley, one half-brother: Gerald Lee Shoemate, one step-sister: Myrna Louise Kaegi, and her beloved horse: “Cookie”.

Friends may call as they desire from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. Private burial will be in the Raritan Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to LaMoine Christian Service Camp.  Please visit Dorothy’s obituary at banksandbeals.com to leave a condolence.
