Melvin “Lynn” Bennett, 74, of Monmouth, IL, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Allure of Lake Storey, Galesburg, IL.

He was born on April 27, 1950 in Monmouth, IL, the son of Richard D. and Martha F. (Aldridge) Bennett.  Lynn was raised and educated in Monmouth and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1968.

Following High School, Lynn served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.    

Lynn married Joanne L. Decker on August 6, 1971 in Monmouth, IL; and she survives.  

He worked at several area businesses including Gale Products and Maytag in Galesburg. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball at South Park in Monmouth, hunting, and fishing.  He loved working in his garden and spending time outdoors.  Most of all, Lynn loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.   

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Bennett of Monmouth, IL; his children, Sergeant Major Troy (Erin) Bennett of Colorado Springs, CO, Kimberly Bennett of Bloomington, IL, Kelsey (Matt) Bertelsen of Monmouth, IL; his grandchildren, Cole Bennett, Evan Bennett, Maverick Olivio, Thea Bertelsen, Rory Bertelsen; his brothers, Bob Bennett of Lake Bracken, IL, Randy Bennett of Imperial Beach, CA, Tim (Lara) Lovitt of Hannibal, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his step father, Owen Lovitt.

A Gathering of Family & Friends will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL.  Military Honors will be presented at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Cremation rites have been accorded.  Memorials can be made to the American Kidney Fund and can be sent to the funeral home. McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
