In response to growing concerns from farmers and producers across the 47th Senate District, State Senator Neil Anderson (R-Andalusia) has sponsored legislation aimed at reducing wildlife-related damage to crops. Senate Bill 710, which passed unanimously in the State Senate on Thursday, offers practical solutions to help farmers manage deer overpopulation.
“Agriculture is Illinois’ leading industry, and when experts in the field raise concerns, it’s our responsibility as lawmakers to find real solutions,” said Senator Anderson. “This is a bipartisan issue, and I’m grateful my colleagues recognized the significant impact deer overpopulation has on both agriculture and public safety.”
Senate Bill 710 would simplify and expand access to deer and turkey hunting permits for qualifying landowners and tenants. Key provisions include:
· Automatic issuance of extra antlerless-only permits during hunting seasons for those meeting specific harvest thresholds.
· Free deer and turkey permits, one either-sex and one antlerless-only for both firearm and archery seasons, available to landowners or tenants with at least 40 acres.
· Expanded use of nuisance permits, allowing landowners to designate others to hunt problem deer on their property.
· Guest permit access for landowners with 240 acres or more, enabling them to request one either-sex and one antlerless-only permit for a guest hunter.
“This bill is a result of collaboration with local farm bureaus, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Illinois Farm Bureau,” Senator Anderson added. “It’s a strong first step, and I’m committed to continuing our conversations further based on continued feedback from our agricultural community.”
Anderson also stressed the public safety benefits of the legislation. With deer-related vehicle accidents increasing, reducing deer populations near roadways is a crucial part of protecting drivers, especially in rural areas where these collisions are most frequent.
“This bill supports our farmers, but it also looks out for everyday Illinoisans who drive our roads,” said Senator Anderson. “It’s about protecting crops, ensuring road safety, and managing wildlife in a responsible, effective way.”
Senate Bill 710 now heads to the House for consideration.
