With the growing season in full swing, West Central FS Certified Crop Specialist Brendan Marshall shares that farmers are expecting the corn crop to begin tasseling.

“I’ve seen a handful of acres that, by the middle of the week, are going to be tasseling or will probably be full tasseled by next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, something like that, maybe earlier, just depends on whet it is, because it’ll go quick,” says Marshall. “Then, there might be a little lull, and then we’ll have another big group of corn that’s ready to go. And by that time, we probably will be spraying soybean fungicide earlier this year, which we normally do at R3.”

Despite a seemingly quick planting season, Marshall adds that the growing progress is on par with historical progress.

“There might be some areas, you know, down around Macomb that are even farther ahead than what we are, from what I could see– I shouldn’t say farther ahead, but there are some fields down there that were shooting tassels yesterday when I came by,” adds Marshall.

Heading into July, Marshall reminds farmers to be looking out for Grey Leaf Spot and Tar Spot.
