The City of Galesburg is set to begin two street maintenance projects this week to extend the life of local roadways. Seal coating and cape seal work will start tomorrow, Tuesday, August 26, with anticipated completion by the end of the week. This annual work is rotated through five sections of the city, allowing for a thorough evaluation and maintenance of roadways on a five-year cycle. This year’s seal coat and cape seal maintenance will be conducted on various roadways in the southeast section of the City, with the specific roadways available on the interactive road construction map on the city’s website.
The seal coat project, which applies a protective layer of oil and rock to the street, will begin on Tuesday, August 26th, and conclude by the end of the week. The contractor will return in approximately one week to sweep up any loose rock.
The cape seal project, which involves a two-layer application of a sealcoat followed by a thin layer of microsurfacing, will also begin on Tuesday, August 26th, and conclude within two days.
Citizens should anticipate that there may be short delays of approximately 15 minutes or less in accessing a street while the sealcoating work is in progress, and cape seal roads may be reduced to one lane with flaggers on-site to direct traffic. No parking is allowed while the work is being conducted, with no parking signs placed on affected roads the day prior.
The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve and maintain Galesburg’s street infrastructure. For more information, please visit the City of Galesburg website or contact the Public Works Department at 309-345-3623.
