Scott’s Law, or the Move Over Law, in Illinois requires drivers to slow down and change lanes for stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. At the start of this year, stricter enforcement was added to the law, reports Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards:

“It has always dealt with emergency vehicles on the side of the road, particularly on a four-lane, you have to slow down and move over. On two-lanes, you have to slow down and be prepared to stop and move over and then pass when it is safe to do so. Now, they have also included moving and stationary together. Running across a moving one is not that uncommon when you are dealing with state road workers, there could be a moving vehicle. Slow down means slow down. It doesn’t mean go by a 70 miles per hour. Those tickets start at $250. In construction zones, it is going to be a court appearance. Slow down and give them some room.”

In addition, the expanded enforcement to Scott’s Law now applies to all vehicles with flashing lights on the side of the roadways.
