Mr. Larry Brown, affectionately known as Larry to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at 4:00 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2026, at Allure of Knox County Nursing Home in Galesburg, Illinois. Larry’s warm-hearted nature and infectious smile left a lasting impression on everyone he met throughout his 62 years.

Larry was born on May 23, 1963 in Sunflower, Mississippi, the son of Eugene and Hester (McCray) Brown Sr. He later moved to Chicago, where he proudly graduated with the Class of 1981 from Du Sable High School. Larry’s strong work ethic led him to The River Station in Peoria, where he was a loyal worker and familiar face for over two decades. After the station’s closure, he continued his service to the community as a mail carrier for The Register-Mail in Galesburg.

Larry’s Christian faith was a huge part of his life; he was a devoted and active member of the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg, where his faith helped guide him in his daily actions and provided comfort and strength. He lived his beliefs through acts of kindness and generosity. Larry also would be known as a pillar of his community, known as an Honorary Police Officer and Fire Fighter, he frequently visited local stations with treats, cards, or simply a kind word, brightening the days of those who served. Larry’s role as a “Community Greeter” was one he took to heart, always ready with a smile and encouragement for his fellow residents. His generous, kind, and friendly nature made him a beloved figure, and his absence will be deeply felt by many.

Larry is survived by his step-sons, Darius Johnson, Antonio (and Becca Braun) Johnson of Galesburg; step-daughters, Nicole Johnson and Javona Johnson of Galesburg; brothers, John (and Mary) McCray of Chicago, and Eugene (and Tara) Brown Jr.; sisters Everlina Winder of Chicago, Dorothy (and Gene) Zolicoffer of Peoria, his best friend, Todd Cooper, and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his long-time partner and mother of his bonus children, Jytone Morgan, his niece, Brenda Winder, two brothers, Edward (and Earnestine) Brown, and Charles McCray, and two sisters, Mary Brown and Ella Mae (and Roosevelt) Dunn.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Central Congregational Church in Galesburg, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Troy Treash. Burial will follow at East Linwood Cemetery, with a repass at the church.

Memorials in Larry’s name, may be made to the Galesburg Police Department or the Galesburg Fire Department. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services of Galesburg. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com.
