As the weather is gradually getting warmer, People’s Do It Center Store Manager in Monmouth, Steve Koss, says now is the best time to start the four-step process of fertilizing your yard:
“The weather is starting to change up a little bit, that is the best time to put down your halts, which is step one of the four step program for fertilizing your lawn. That is how you prevent crabgrass and some of the other harsher weeds that are a little harder to kill. That is your pre-emergent treatment. Step two is applied in late spring and that will be like a weed control, a lawn food type product. Then step three you are going to apply in the summer, which is mostly lawn food. There is a little bit of weed killer in that, but it is mostly lawn food. Then step four you put on in the fall and that is a winter prep so that it will be easier next year.”
Koss reports crabgrass was the worst it had been seen in 2025, even for those that had treated their yards.
