Hospice is not only for the final days of life, it’s about transitioning care to advance well-being and honoring the quality of life for individuals. Director of Clinical Services with Compassus, Katie Schofield, explains the support provided by their care team for families:
“We have a team of people. It is not always just nurses. We have spiritual support. We have a wonderful chaplain. We also have a social worker that can help with extra resources within the community, as well as nursing care and personal care provided by a home health aide. Another thing that hospice also provides too is volunteers. With hospice and healthcare, we are so focused on the tasks and what we are doing, but sometimes it is not about the tasks that get done, it is about just the companionship that a volunteer can provide. We also have bereavement support for our patients’ families when that time does come. We can provide counseling and help with organizing those thoughts of grieving.”
Locally, Compassus is located in Galesburg at 799 North Henderson Street.
