Ameren Illinois knows some customers rely on generators during power outages. While generators can be convenient, improper installation or use can damage electrical equipment or cause serious injury or death to generator users and utility workers.

There are two types of generators commonly used in homes: portable generators and permanently installed generators – and each requires specific safety precautions.

Types of Generators

  • Portable generators are typically gasoline-powered and designed to provide electricity directly to individual devices such as refrigerators or lamps. These generators are not designed to be connected to your home’s electrical system.
  • Permanently installed generators are usually powered by natural gas and connected directly to the home’s electrical system. These units must be installed with a transfer switch, which prevents electricity from traveling outside the home and backfeeding into Ameren Illinois power lines. Always have permanent generators and transfer switches installed by a qualified professional.

Ameren Illinois Generator Safety Tips

  • Call Ameren Illinois at 800.755.5000 if you plan to install backup generation.
  • Carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper connection and use of both permanent and portable generators.
  • You are required by law to ensure that electricity from your generator does not backfeed into Ameren Illinois power lines during an outage.
  • Proper generator installation is critical. Improper use can damage your equipment or electrical system and may result in serious injury or death to generator users and utility workers.
  • Never directly connect a portable generator to your home’s electrical system. Doing so can energize utility lines and poses a significant safety risk. Only qualified professionals should perform approved electrical connections.
  • Ensure the total electrical load connected to your generator does not exceed the manufacturer’s rated capacity.
  • Never use a portable generator indoors. Place generators outdoors in a dry location, well away from doors, windows, and vents.
  • Use extreme caution when handling generator fuel. Never refuel a generator while it is running. Turn it off and allow it to cool completely before adding fuel.

General Storm Safety Reminders

  • Safety is the top priority during any weather event.
  • Stay clear of all downed power lines or poles. Always assume a downed line is energized.
  • Be especially cautious around standing water, pools of water, brush, shrubs, and fallen trees that may conceal power lines.
  • To report power outages or downed lines, contact Ameren Illinois at 800.755.5000.
  • If your power is out, check circuit breakers or fuses to rule out household issues. Avoid flooded areas to prevent the risk of electrical shock.
  • Fuel your vehicles.
  • Charge cell phones.
  • Restock or create a home emergency kit.
