Local Grain Manager Weighs In on Summer Crop and Market Trends

As the crops emerge across the region, the focus turns to not only rainfall amounts and temperatures, but also market activity. Manager of Farmers Grain Company in Roseville, Eric Wuthrich, offers insight of what to watch for this summer:

“Last year, we had some warm nights during pollination. Just watch the weather and hopefully have some cool nights during pollination. I know just south of Quincy there is some corn putting out silks, so it is coming quick. Also, you want to see China showing up and buying beans for this fall and just watch the general outside liars because as far as around here, it looks pretty decent,” says Wuthrich.

“One thing I was surprised with is on September 30th last year we were paying 9.50 and 3.75, in October we were at 10.75 and 4.10, and in November we were at 11.00 and 4.15. It does seem that the last couple of years we have kind of rally coming out of harvest with grain. While it may look difficult this summer and things may not really rally until harvest starts, there is a decent chance for a rally this fall. I am not predicting that is will or will not happen, but I think there is a good chance,” Wuthrich adds.
