Mr. Steven E. Riney, 68, of Peoria, Illinois, formerly of Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 10:10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the Loft Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in East Peoria, Illinois.
He was born on November 16, 1957, in Avon, Illinois, to Doyle L. and Marilyn J. (Cochran) Riney. He married Shelley Onion on June 16, 1979, in Abingdon, Illinois.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Shelley Riney of Peoria; three sons, Jeremy Riney of Canones, New Mexico, Justin Riney of Fort Mill, South Carolina, and Jared Riney of Galesburg; one daughter, Stephanie Riney of Peoria; his father, Doyle Riney of Abingdon; one brother, Gary (Laurie) Riney of Abingdon; one sister, Kathy (Eric) Mueller of Decatur, Illinois; and two granddaughters, Reagan and Ryan Riney. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Riney, and a daughter-in-law, Jamie Riney.
Steve graduated from Abingdon High School in 1975. He continued his education at Illinois State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1979, and later received a master’s degree in business from Bradley University in 1986. He began his career with Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, serving as Director of Information Services. He later worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Stockton, California, before becoming a national consultant with Encore Health Resources. He retired in 2020.
Steve was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church in Edwards, Illinois. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed cheering on Illinois State Redbirds basketball. In his free time, he loved golfing, fishing, and playing the guitar. Music was a lifelong passion, and he had been a member of the local band “Shiver” since his high school years. Above all else, Steve treasured the time he spent with his family.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, Abingdon Chapel. Visitation will also be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Bethany Baptist Church, 7422 N. Heinz Lane, Edwards, Illinois 61528. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Pastor Joshua Beakley officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at Abingdon Cemetery.
