Rose M. “China” Meyer, 73, of Galesburg, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, following a brief illness.
She was born May 3, 1953, in Galesburg, the daughter of Joe O. and Helen (Vega) Barragan. She married James A. “Slim” Meyer on October 9, 1976, in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on September 13, 2023, after nearly 47 years of marriage.
She is survived by her children, Aaron Meyer of Orange County, California and Michele Meyer of Galesburg; two grandsons, James and Jacob Meyer; her mother, Helen Barragan of Galesburg; a brother, Eduardo (Jeanette) Barragan of Florida; and three sisters, Victoria (Phil) Adams, Linda (Tim) Rice, and Diana (Rick) Kenan, all of Galesburg; and several nieces and nephews, including a special great nephew, Tavian Campbell. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Gladys Meyer.
China will be remembered as a kind and loving person, who showed the love of Jesus and always put others first.
China was raised and educated in Galesburg, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1971. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. China was a teacher at Christian Life Center, Bethany Christian Academy, and Galesburg Christian School. Prior to retirement, she was a substitute teacher with District 205. After retiring, she continued to give her time to young people as a tutor and mentor.
China was a devoted member of Radiant Worship Center, formerly First Church of the Open Bible. She taught Wednesday night small groups and served as director of the children’s program.
China loved caring for her 105-year-old mother. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Her home was very special to her, and she loved tending to her flowers and plants. She loved seeing her grandson Jimmy pitch and watched all of his games online and several in person each year. She was always amazed by her grandson Jake’s creativity and natural ability, especially in his elaborate Lego builds. Those qualities reminded her so much of his grandfather, Slim. She loved her country and American values. Walking her dog, Cooper, was another of her favorite activities.
Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Radiant Worship Center. Funeral service will follow at noon at the church with Rev. Mark Dexter officiating. Cremation will be accorded after the funeral with burial later in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Radiant Worship Center.
