Mr. Max R. Epperson, 91, of Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 7:08 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Seminary Manor Nursing Home.
Max was born September 4, 1935, in Meadville, Missouri, the son of Orval E. and Ethel M. (Bloss) Epperson. He graduated from Northwestern High School in Mendon, Missouri, in 1953. In 1954, Max answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1954 to 1957 during the Korean War. Following his military service, Max returned home, where he met the love of his life, Bettie L. Lark. The two were married on November 22, 1958, in Laclede, Missouri, beginning a loving marriage and a life together centered around family. They shared nearly 68 years of marriage, building a lifetime of memories and raising their four children.
Max dedicated 38½ years of his career to the Admiral/Maytag Corporation, where he worked as an engineer. Through his years of service and commitment, he built a long and rewarding career before retiring in 1996.
Outside of work, Max enjoyed spending time outdoors and making the most of the simple pleasures in life. He had a love for hunting, fishing, golfing, and gardening, finding enjoyment in nature and the time spent pursuing his favorite hobbies. An avid reader, Max also appreciated a good book and the opportunity to learn and explore through reading. His Christian faith was an important part of his life, and he was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon, where he maintained a connection to his fellow veterans and community.
Above all, Max treasured his family. He took pride in the family he and Bettie built together and leaves behind a lasting legacy through his children, grandchildren, and the many memories they shared. His long life was marked by service, hard work, faith, and a love for the people and activities that brought him happiness.
Max is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Bettie; his four children, Dennis K. (Torrie) Epperson of Mulvane, Kansas, Denise J. (Vince) Brewer of Frisco, Texas, Dana R. (Rebecca) Epperson of Rockford, Illinois, and Darren M. (Jaylene) Epperson of Sherman, Illinois; two brothers, Keith (Shirley) Epperson of Rothville, Missouri and Donnie (Shirley) Epperson of Marceline, Missouri; four step sisters, Linda, Patsy, Phyllis and Sandy all of Joplin, Missouri and thirteen grandchildren, Blake (Melissa) Epperson, Riley (Amber) Epperson, Eric (Sarah) Brewer, Kendra Brewer, Kathleen (Matt) Brewer-Sinclair, Tyler Epperson, Andrew Epperson, Josephine Epperson, Joseph (Ashley) Epperson, Madison Epperson, Sean Cullinane, Stephen (Krysta) Cullinane, Katie (JR) Huffman and nine great grandchildren, Dean, Isaac, Valerie, Charlotte, Nolan, Elizabeth ‘”Ellie”, Aiden, Easton, Kyra and one on the way, Miles.
