Folk Ensemble Hammer and Pick Opens the 2020 Carl Sandburg Songbag Concert Series on March 8

GALESBURG, Ill. – The Carl Sandburg Songbag Concert Series kicks off the 2020 season with folk musicians Hammer and Pick at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg on Sunday, March 8.
Entertaining audiences in Western Illinois since the 1980s, the group features multi-talented artists Wendy Anderson, John Heasly, Jan Sams, and John Wagner. The folk ensemble ranges across many genres of traditional music including Celtic, Blues, Railroad and Civil War ballads, Gospel, and contemporary folk-style songs.
The March 8 Sandburg Songbag performance by Hammer and Pick will be in the Sandburg site’s barn at 313 E. Third Street in Galesburg. The show starts at 2:00 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. A break for refreshments will occur at 3:00 p.m. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. The 2020 Sandburg Songbag concerts are funded in part by the Mark and Celia Godsil Family Fund, a Donor Advised Fund of the Galesburg Community Foundation. The concert is presented by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

Carl Sandburg collected and performed America’s folk songs. The concert series takes its name from Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag” published in 1927.
