Back in October, the Illinois Department of Agriculture announced a cost-sharing funding opportunity through the Partners for Conservation program to support the adoption of no-till or strip-till systems on eligible acres. Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Shawnee Sheehan shared that 29 local applications were selected for funding.
“We have between 11,000 and 12,000 acres allocated just here in Warren County—29 total applicants were selected. That’s a lot of acres for me to be going out and verifying that they’re doing what they say they’re doing,” Sheehan said. “Right now we’re in the verification stage of forms, so we’re looking at all of the acres that were enrolled and making sure they’re not enrolled in other programs for no-till and strip-till, and getting all of that background data entered for the department before we can start doing any kind of physical verification.”
Eligible fields are committed to no-till or strip-till practices for three years in an effort to help Illinois meet its nutrient-loss reduction and climate goals.
