Carl Sandburg College boasted 76 student-athletes who earned Academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors in the 2022-23 academic year.

All 11 Chargers teams had at least one player named academic all-conference. Baseball had the most representatives of any Sandburg squad, with 20 members. Softball and women’s basketball each had 10 Academic All-Arrowhead recipients to lead Sandburg’s women’s teams. Student-athletes must have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average and passed a minimum of 12 credit hours in each semester to be considered for Academic All-Arrowhead status.

Eight Chargers who participated in multiple sports earned the distinction. Among them were Natalie Righi and Hunter Caves, Sandburg’s nominees for the Bob Bopp Award, given to the conference’s outstanding male and female student athletes.

Righi, a sophomore from Pekin, was a key contributor on the Chargers volleyball, women’s basketball and softball teams in addition to playing with the women’s golf team as a freshman. This past season she helped the Chargers to an unbeaten Arrowhead championship on the volleyball court; averaged 6.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in basketball; and hit .374 with six home runs and 31 RBIs while playing shortstop on the diamond.

Caves, a sophomore from Alburnett, Iowa, played two seasons with Sandburg’s men’s basketball team and joined the Chargers baseball team this spring. He led Sandburg in scoring and rebounding at 10.0 points and 5.3 boards per game. On the diamond, he posted a .381 on-base percentage and scored 19 runs in 36 games.
