Timothy W. Courtney

Timothy W. Courtney of Rio, Illinois transitioned into eternal life Thursday morning, February 1, 2024, at the age of 73 surrounded by his family. He is survived by Mary (nee Shaver), his wife of 53 years, three sons, Aaron (Deanna), Alex (Natasha), and Abram, and six grandchildren, Zachary, Natalie, Kaitlyn, Rozalynn, Jessica and Evan.

Tim was born to LaVerne H. and Helen J. Courtney on June 3, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa, becoming the sole sibling to Richard D. Courtney, 16 years his elder. The family moved to Galesburg, Illinois in 1953 where Tim built childhood friendships that would last a lifetime. Under the watchful eye of his father, Tim learned trades that would be called upon throughout his life for the benefit of his family and friends.

Tim attended Galesburg High School, graduating in 1968, where he was introduced to such varied pursuits as photography, marine biology, and automotive machine shop. These interests culminated in multiple magazine cover and article shots, numerous wedding portfolios, a collaboration with the Knox College Biology Department and Green Oaks Biological Field Station that leveraged his SCUBA expertise, and countless pro bono backyard automotive repair jobs for family and friends.

On December 28, 1970, he married his high school sweetheart after beginning his career with Burlington Northern Railroad as a locomotive engineer. His search for Biblical truth ended six years later at the hands of a local minister who explained the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the young household. Tim’s subsequent rebirth into newness of life led to a sacrificial job change, placing God and family above his career, the dividends of which continue to accrue to his children’s families to this very day.

As an avid outdoorsman, Tim intentionally balanced his love for hunting and shooting sports with Kingdom minded activities such as teaching home Bible studies and engaging in outreach ministry, often featuring his acoustic guitar and vocal talent.

Tim was a devoted vegetable gardener, although the preharvested crops were often pilfered by his three sons. Tim successfully nurtured nonindigenous flowers such as orchids for their intrinsic beauty and as a challenge to his green thumb.

Tim retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 2010 after 40 years of service. He enjoyed exploring National Parks with his wife and spending outdoor time with his grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 10 am to 11 am at First Apostolic Tabernacle, 562 W. North Street, Galesburg, Illinois immediately followed by a celebration service at the church at 11 am. The burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Tim’s name to his church, First Apostolic Tabernacle. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online sympathy messages may be offered at www.h-p-w.com .
