Names Released in Fatal Accident on Highway 4

***** UPDATE *****

Coroner Mark Thomas has authorized the release of names of the individuals involved in the fatal collision on Knox Hwy 4, on Friday, March 1, 2024.

-Mariliel Slightom, age 38 of Toulon was pronounced deceased at the scene

-Charles Slightom, age 41 of Toulon was injured and transported from the scene

-Ariel Harlan, age 24 of Toulon was injured and transported from the scene.

-Joshua Zuelly, age 38 of Toulon was treated on scene

There was also a juvenile passenger who was not injured.

Charles Slightom was cited for Disobeying a Traffic Control Device, Driving While License Suspended, Driving Under the Influence (a)(2), Operating Uninsured Vehicle, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

This crash is still under investigation.

All persons mentioned are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A crash in Galesburg on Friday left a woman dead. It happened at the intersection between High 4 and Highway 15. Investigators say a Red Pontiac blew the stop sign at Highway 4, and smashed into another car. The passenger in that car, a 38-year-old woman from Pontiac, died in the crash. Knox County deputies say the driver of the Pontiac was driving with a suspended license.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓: Two Vehicle Fatal Traffic Crash

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄: Knox Highway 4 and Knox Highway 15, Knox County

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍: Friday, March 1, 2024, at approximately 2:14p.m.

𝐕𝐄𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐒:

Unit 1: Red 1994 Pontiac

Unit 2: White 2004 Chevrolet Truck

DRIVERS:

Unit 1: 41-year-old male, Toulon, IL- Transported by OSF Life Flight to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Unit 2: 24-year-old female, Toulon, IL – Transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

PASSENGERS:

Unit 1: 38-year-old female, Toulon, IL – Deceased

Unit 2: 28-year-old male, Toulon, IL- Refused Medical

Unit 2: 2-year-old child, Toulon, IL- Transported to hospital by family

𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐘: Preliminary information indicates Unit 1 was traveling North on Knox Highway 15. Unit 1 driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Unit 2 was traveling West on Knox Highway 4 when Unit 2 struck the passenger side of Unit 1. This caused Unit 1 and Unit 2 to go off the roadway to the North. Names are not being released at this time, pending next of kin notifications.

𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐒: Unit 1 driver was cited for Disobeying a Stop Sign; Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, and Driving While Driver’s License Suspended

No further information is available.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team is currently investigating. The following agencies assisted at the scene: GHAS, AOW First Responders, OSF Life Flight, Knox County Corner, Stark County Ambulance Service, and Galesburg Police Department.
