Mrs. Bernadette M. “Bernie” Schenck, 96, of Galesburg, Illinois formerly of Abingdon passed away at 9:45 am, Friday, June 21, 2024, at the Hawthorne Inn.

Bernie was born March 17, 1928, in Galesburg, the daughter of Roy R. and Blossom M. (Larson) Carlson. She married Edward C. Schenck, Sr. on April 19, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa. After sixty-three years of marriage, he preceded her on death on May 30, 2009.

Bernie is survived by her son, Dan (Cindy) Schenck of Poplar Grove, Illinois; her daughter, Jeanie (Rick) Hanna of Abingdon; two daughters-in-law, Bonnie Schenck and Paula Schenck Brackett both of Abingdon; two sisters, Sandy Carlson of Rockford, Illinois and Pat Buchanek of Baytown, Texas; eleven grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her two sons, Ed Schenck, Jr. and Rudie Schenck, her sister, June Rogers, her granddaughter, Diana Rose Ann Hanna and her great great granddaughter, Scarlet R. Lundeen.

Bernie was a homemaker most of her life, caring for her family. She later worked as the secretary and bookkeeper for Ed’s Petroleum for fifteen years. Bernie was member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, where she served as the superintendent of the church nursery. She was a past member of the Abingdon Fire Department Auxiliary and a past member of Young’s Lake near Kirkwood. Bernie was an avid bicyclist and could be seen riding around all of Galesburg.

Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 pm Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the church with Rev. Conner Morrison and her son, Rev. Dan Schenck officiating. The burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting her family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com.
