The Abingdon-Avon Tornado football squad ended their season with a loss to ROWVA/Williamsfield last Friday night. The 2024 Tornadoes finished with a record of (3-6) overall and (3-5) in a very competitive LincolnLand Small School Division. Between the two divisions of the LincolnLand Conference, 8 of the 17 participating schools will play this weekend in the first round of the IHSA playoffs. Two more teams, including the aforementioned ROWVA/Williamsfield Cougars and new member to the conference Bureau Valley, ended at (4-5), just missing the playoffs by one game. Counting this season, the Tornadoes have not qualified for the postseason for the last 3 seasons. That’s the longest stretch since the consolidation of the Abingdon and Avon school districts in 2013. In 2021, A-Town made a run to the class 1A quarterfinal round before losing to the Ridgeview-Lexington co-op. The Tornado football program has been led by Rick Quinn since the consolidation. Quinn was also the head coach of the Abingdon Commandos the 3 years prior to Abingdon and Avon hooking up. Quinn has accrued 72 wins in his 15 year career, including 7 playoff appearances. He said on the WRAM Morning Show on Tuesday that this year’s team didn’t have the season they wanted but the cupboard is not bare heading into the off-season and 2025.
