Western Illinois University has been recognized as a “Best Midwestern University” by U.S. News and World Report.

In the rankings for 2025, WIU was recognized as a “Top Performer on Social Mobility,” and had the distinction of being one of three Illinois public universities within the top 60 overall among ranked schools.

Western was also recognized as a “Top Public School,” “Best College for Veterans” and a “Best Value School.”

“Mentoring relationships, engaging experiences in and out of the classroom and experiential learning opportunities amplify student potential and inspire their imagination about what they can achieve while they attend WIU and after they graduate,” WIU Interim President Kristi Mindrup said. “Individualized, student-centered attention in an accessible and a caring community make WIU a special place.”

The U.S. News Best Colleges ranking includes institutions that offer undergraduate majors and master’s programs. The rankings are based on various measures, including graduation and retention rates, social mobility, faculty resources, expert opinion, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving.
