Western Illinois University Athletics set a new #GivingTuesday record for the second straight year on December 3. The 2024 campaign received online and call-in contributions from alumni, fans, and friends, totaling nearly $45,000 to athletics.

In 2023, WIU Athletics raised $26,891 (which was a 526 percent increase from 2022), along with the help of an anonymous $10,000 matching challenge. This year’s amount of $44,425 marked a 65 percent increase from the previous year’s total and was due in large part to $27,000 in matching challenges from various donors.

“Leatherneck Nation stepped up in a big way on Giving Tuesday, and I especially want to say thanks to our donors who put up the matching challenges,” said Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb. “Support like what we saw on #GivingTuesday helps us to provide great experiences for all of our Leatherneck student-athletes!”

The collective impact of these contributions will play a key role in the Leatherneck student-athlete experience this year, providing additional support for all 18 NCAA Division I teams.

“Thank you to all of our incredible donors for their generosity last week,” said Dr. Tayler Onion, Associate Athletic Director for External Relations. “Crowdfunding efforts, like what we saw on #GivingTuesday, help us to empower our student-athletes to excel on and off the field, and our dedicated alumni and supporters truly made a difference on December 3.”
